山坡漫长,坂道险峻,牛已疲惫;
Low jagged mountains,
Towering disorderly rocks,
The cart rumbles over the rugged, stony path.
The mountain's winding course follows the ravine,
The tilted wheels and axle seem about to overturn.
Emerging from the narrow pass between two cliffs,
Suddenly a hundred li of flat plain comes into view.
The slope is long, the ridge steep, oxen tire;
The day is cold, dusk falls, men's hearts grow urgent.
Yang Bao endured hunger as an official at the Imperial College,
With the money he bought this painting, just a full scroll.
He loves its aged trees and hard rocks,
The winding mountain paths turning back.
High and low, curved and straight,
Horizontal, slanted, hidden, revealed.
Beauty and ugliness, facing forward or back, each has its posture,
Every detail, near or far, can be clearly distinguished.
He himself says there were several masters of old,
Their ancient paintings passed down, but their names are lost.
Those who see them later—who will know to call them?
He begged the elder Mei for a poem to record and praise it.
Ancient paintings capture the idea, not the form;
Mei's poems chant of things without hiding feelings.
Few know to forget form and grasp the essence;
Better to see the painting as if reading the poem.
Then one knows Scholar Yang is truly fond of the rare,
Possessing both this painting and this poem.
Joy that can be self-sufficient is true wealth,
Must one have gold, jade, fame, and high riches?
Mornings looking at the painting, evenings reading the poem,
Scholar Yang, with these, can stave off hunger.
