The singers and dancers are long dead,
The palace beams and pillars have collapsed.
Over the old foundation, black thorns grow;
Ancient tiles are buried in deep furrows.
The jade-like substance decays before the bones,
The pinewood beams turn to dust, light as air.
Built solid, yet peeled by wind and rain,
Kneaded with care, mixed with lead and paste.
It does not fly like mandarin ducks in pairs,
But bears the charm of tadpole inscriptions.
Ground smooth, it loses its gritty roughness;
Tapped gently, it rings like metal or stone.
First sought in the humble fields below,
It then graced the desk, pure and serene.
In use, its value is truly prized;
In history, none can compare with it.
Duanxi's purple clouds are cut for inkstones,
Yet vainly bear their fame in the mortal world.
Han Yu wrote of the Hairy Brush,
Why praise only Tao's Inkstone?
If we compare them by years,
The Inkstone should be regarded as the elder brother.
