A venerable scholar in the Jade Hall drafting edicts,
Temporarily rides his bear-carriage to the east of the river.
When governance is done, a feast is held on a leisure day,
Choosing a scenic spot, we all head to the Golden Immortal's palace.
The secluded pavilion, open and airy, with bamboos towering dense,
Their shadows, lingering low, cast by the sun, are thick and cool.
Sitting quietly, I love this gentleman (bamboo),
Then I know refined tastes are shared by human hearts.
Screen-like hills and layered rocks in hues of deep green—
I suspect the giant spirit tore off a peak from Mount Min'e.
Heavy frost withers the dried-up trees,
Flying leaves pierce through the sparse lattice window.
The fragrant feast arrays seasonal fruits,
Resplendent, interspersed with greens and reds.
Mutton ribs are tender, crab claws plump,
The army kitchen's wine is fine, amber and strong.
Loosening our belts, we sit, dispensing with vexing rites,
In simple headcloths facing each other, we chat at ease.
Words spoken in accord with the heart,
The highest joy is not in strings or woodwinds.
Such lofty sentiments, how can they compare with the Seven Sages of Jin?
They merely boasted of their carefree abandon.
After drinking, we find meaning in facing the chessboard,
All worldly matters are not enough to entangle the heart.
Humans live between heaven and earth,
How different from duckweeds meeting on rivers and lakes?
By chance we gather, then part again,
East, west, south, north, following the drifting wind.
Know that such a gathering is hard to come by,
For you, sir, I'll drain another golden cup.
