荒芜的池塘水已干涸，只剩蹄印般的小水洼，
一双白鹤翩然飞来，啄食于午后的树荫下。
此处纵使有鱼，也该渴死了，
它们不沾湿自己的喙，只是悠闲地俯看观察。
病弱的鹞鹰尚且畏惧泥坑带来的羞辱，
栖息的鸟儿常常担忧弓箭与罗网的侵捕。
它们怎比得上那甘于寂寞的舂锄（即白鹭），
独自站立在长满藻荇的清澈水滩深处。

The desolate pond dries up, leaving but hoof-prints' mire,
A pair of cranes peck gracefully in noon shade's attire.
Even if fish were here, they'd die of thirst in vain,
Not wetting their beaks, they gaze with calm disdain.
The sick kite still fears disgrace in muddy pit,
The roosting bird oft dreads the snare and arrow's hit.
How like the pond heron, content in solitude deep,
Standing serene where algae and water plants steep.
