For five years in Fuling, a stranger I've stayed,
In poverty and illness, quietly arrayed.
I've seldom ventured out since days of yore,
And now indolence has become my core.
Officials, many are wealthy and proud,
Clearly with the times, they race aloud.
They seek drunkenness regardless of cost,
Surely no dust in their cooking pots is tossed.
Not merely for mutual joy they strive,
But rather as sages themselves they contrive.
Though Lord Wang holds an official post,
His laughter shies from the mighty host.
Bowing behind the crowd, he stands apart,
His brilliance shines like jade, a work of art.
Behind him, government offices press,
Before his eyes, false respect they express.
Stealing leisure, he visits my thatched abode,
Seeking solace, his vision clear and unowed.
Though not intoxicated by red skirts' delight,
His refined conversation is a purer light.
When autumn is high, may he come often still,
Do not disdain the muddy road's uphill.
