At sixty-four years of age, I was condemned to gather firewood for ghosts.
I packed my books and left through the east gate, waving farewell to my countrymen.
Smiling, I pointed to my clothes, no longer stained by the capital's dust.
An old man appeared then, urging me to take good care of myself.
He said, 'Fifteen years from now, I'll welcome you by the Zhejiang shore.'
I laughed and replied to this old man, 'Are you speaking of a future life?'
How unpredictable things are! Our encounter felt like a different era.
His crane-like hair had no remaining black strands; his ragged clothes spoke of bitter poverty.
By the dry riverhead in autumn wind, we shook hands with a fresh smile.
We bought wine, cooked chicken and pork, and recounted past events in full.
Counting old colleagues from the court, their scattered state adds grief and bitterness.
Though both the old man and I have aged, our loyal hearts remain vast and unyielding.
For a thousand li I'd still drive my carriage; how much more for a neighbor nearby!
With autumn high, fine breeze and moon, visit me often—do not grow weary.
