The King of Chu himself fought fierce beasts hand to hand,
Turning seven marshes and three rivers into his hunting land.
The city gates swung open at night for the hunting party's return,
Ten thousand torches lit the sky, turning darkness into day so bright they burn.
The music's roar shook the earth for a hundred miles around,
From every tree, the roosting crows in startled flight were found.
The palace beauties, thinking dawn was about to break,
Spent fortunes on hair perfume and lip rouge for appearance's sake.
The music, from morn till night, scarcely knew a pause,
Blame not the roosting crows for finding no secure claws.
