解牛悟养生，牧羊知治民。

jiě niú wù yǎng shēng， mù yáng zhī zhì mín。

通一万事毕，我每思古人。

tōng yī wàn shì bì， wǒ měi sī gǔ rén。

小园财三亩，手自艺嘉木。

白话文翻译

从解牛领悟养生之道，

从牧羊知晓治理百姓之理。

贯通了根本的道理，万事都能完成，

我常常思念古代的贤人。

我的小园子只有三亩地，

亲手种植美好的树木。

首先要培育它们的根基，

又要告诫自己不要急于求成。

老松树卧在山涧底部，

历经千年冰霜的侵袭。

我难道是樗树和栎树那样的无用之材吗？

我只求不被砍伐伤害罢了。

Butchering an ox, one comprehends nurturing life;

Herding sheep, one understands governing the people.

Grasping the One, all tasks are accomplished—

I often ponder the ancients.

My small garden is but three acres,

Where I plant fine trees with my own hands.

First, I must nurture their roots,

And guard against the desire for haste.

An old pine lies at the ravine's bottom,

For a thousand years, it has endured frost and ice.

Am I like the useless trees?

I only seek to avoid being cut or harmed.
