但宁愿饿死也要坚守。
孩子,我教你读书,
不要求你一天写十张纸。
要逐字讲解读音和字形,
更要亲身去实践履行。
果真能被称为善人,
便可以终老于故乡。
不要提五鼎供养的富贵,
我鄙视那些食肉者。
Driven out, I bundled my quilt and came home;
Summoned back, I shook my robe and rose to roam.
Such are the trifles of a vulgar man,
How could a true scholar follow this plan?
The year before last, when eastward I did go,
I pointed to my heart, swore by the river's flow.
I knew full well my food would not suffice,
Yet chose to starve to death, paying the price.
My son, I teach you books, not pages ten a day,
Explain each character's sound and form, I say.
But more, you must yourself in practice tread,
If you can truly be called good, it's said,
Then you may grow old in your native land.
Speak not of five-ding feasts, grand and bland,
For meat-eaters are what I hold in disdain.
