If clouds were truly mindless,
Why such wondrous shapes we yearn for?
If clouds indeed possess a heart,
For whom do their hundred transformations unfold?
Do they pity this old man's sorrows,
Emerging just to bring him joy?
They level a thousand peaks in a sweep,
Or hoist a single summit, perilously high.
A silver city thrusts up, towering and steep;
A jade sea stretches, vast and misty-wide.
Now as a coiling host of dragons they leap,
Now as a lone crane soaring in the sky.
Rolling and spreading, they hold a leisured grace;
Coming and going, in a sudden, traceless pace.
Billowing, they mantle the pine tops' crown;
Hazy, they gleam by the water's edge, drifting down.
They pass the monk's window, bearing rain;
They linger by the fishing rock, companion to the moon.
Not only do they baffle the painter's strain,
My verse, too, finds it hard to match their tune.
The only pact is to swear a bond with them,
To share a lifetime's mutual delight.
To endure hunger is easy, I condemn,
But this friend—never can I treat it with slight.
