Beside the road, an ancient well lies still,
Long disused, with no one to draw from its deep.
The neighbors together dredge it with a will,
And slowly, cold springs begin to seep.
I wish to rinse and cleanse myself, and ride away,
Hoping to keep the worldly dust at bay.
Yet hesitant, I turn and leave the place—
The rope is short, how can it reach the water's face?
