In youth I served as scribe for the Grand Historian's pen,
In later years, I guarded books in the Stone Canal's den.

This empty fame I hold, in truth, is but a borrowed grace,
The constant law of rise and fall governs time and space.
Now at the foot of Mount Kuaiji, in my ninetieth year,
I daily bear my hoe to tend the wild, neglected field.
