At year's end, time stands lofty and extreme.
I burn the ash to rid the cabbages of pests,
Send taro as thanks to the ox doctor for his tests.
At dawn, from bamboo pipes, I water herbs with care,
By lamplit window, at night, I cover chess pieces laid bare.
Do not blame me for shutting my door to the world outside,
In twilight years, few new friends by my side abide.
