欲晓不能寐，亟起坐北堂。

yù xiǎo bù néng mèi， jí qǐ zuò běi táng。

斋庄对断简，左右陈朱黄。

zhāi zhuāng duì duàn jiǎn， zuǒ yòu chén zhū huáng。

白话文翻译

天快亮了却无法入睡，

急忙起身坐在北边的厅堂。

怀着庄重的心情面对残破的书卷，

左右摆放着朱砂和雌黄。

墨汁像一池深湛的清水，

半截篆香袅袅地升起轻烟。

我这老书生不让自己安逸，

庆幸这夏日白天漫长。

那长头发的孩子真是奇特啊，

他的勇猛之气无人能挡。

怎能得到几年的健康身体，

好与孩儿讲述尧舜的德政。

Unable to sleep as dawn draws near,

I rise in haste and sit in the north hall.

With solemn mind, I face the broken scrolls,

Arrayed on left and right are crimson and yellow.

Deep and still is a pool of ink,

Faintly curling, half a coil of incense.

This old scholar does not indulge in ease,

But finds fortune in these long summer days.

How wondrous is the long-headed lad,

His ardent courage none can withstand.

If only I could stay in health for years,

To teach my son the ways of Yao and Shun.
