我平生确实善于结交朋友，
对待新朋旧友，情谊的厚薄一视同仁。
曾解下驾车的边马帮助越石父脱困，
也曾调整俸禄给予自己的车夫。
但仍被说成以礼法逼迫下属，
免不了因节俭而被认为固执。
往日的高尚风气已经消散，
后世却竞相追逐衰败的踪迹。
陈国的妾室轻视华美的丝织品，
贤德之士穿着破旧的短衣和裤子。
如果这样的人不被重视并重新得到，
他们被遗弃的言论直到今天才开始传布。
我也是太史公的徒辈，
手持鞭子（从事史官事业）是我所欣羡向往的。

In life, I truly excelled at making friends,
Treating new and old with equal depth of care.
I unyoked my steed to aid Yue Shi in his plight,
And adjusted the salary for my charioteer.
Yet I'm still said to have forced etiquette on those below,
And inevitably, my frugality was seen as rigid.
The noble ethos of the past has now faded away,
While decadent traces are eagerly pursued in later times.
Concubines in Chen state disdained fine silks and gauze,
And worthy scholars wore tattered robes and trousers.
If such men are not valued and regained,
Their discarded teachings only now begin to spread.
I too am a disciple of the Grand Historian,
Holding the whip is what I admire and aspire to.
