昨来计莲芡，颇不减粳稻。

出了城，终于得以自在，
下马来，从事幽静的探访。
旷野荒芜，无人耕种，
蒺藜长满了牛走的道路。
常常遇到饥饿的人们，
成群结队地挖掘野草。
不仅有黄发的孩童，
也有白发苍苍的老人。
问他们，他们指向积聚的洪水，
说这水势浩大，无边无际。
房屋早已被洪水冲荡漂走，
树木大多枯死站立。
吃这些东西暂且延缓死亡，
即便在尧的时代也久遭涝灾。
不能离开祖先的坟墓，
更想依附于蒲草和藻类。
近来估算莲子和芡实，
觉得收成并不比粳稻少多少。
明年应当大量种植，
或许妻子儿女能得以保全。

Leaving the city, I find myself free at last,
Dismounting my horse to seek out quietude.
The vast wilds lie barren, untilled and vast,
Thistles and thorns choke the paths where cattle intrude.
Often I meet the starving, a pitiful sight,
In crowds they dig for wild herbs, a desperate plight.
Not only the yellow-haired youth, so frail and slight,
But also the white-haired elders, bereft of might.
Asked, they point to the accumulated flood's might,
Saying its expanse stretches far out of sight.
Homes long ago washed away in the watery blight,
Trees stand mostly withered, a skeletal sight.
Eating this, they but postpone death's final night,
Even in Yao's age, long floods brought endless plight.
Unable to leave their ancestral graves' site,
They cling to reeds and algae, holding on tight.
Recently they reckoned lotus and foxnut's might,
Finding them not much less than rice, a hopeful light.
Next year they'll sow in abundance, with all their might,
Hoping wives and children may survive the night.
