公绰的志向本不在于高位，
他不会居住在滕、薛那样的小国。
黄香脱离了低微的官职，
依然在东观收集典籍。
大船不是用来舀取汤汁的，
鹰隼也不是用来捕捉鱼儿的。
狐皮裘衣不是用来背负柴薪的，
鼎鬲这样的礼器岂能用来支撑车轮。
万物生长各有其适宜的所在，
得以实现志向便都自在安然。
违背本性就容易改变固有的常态，
抓住末节而谬误地接续根本。
古代的贤人贵在相互知心，
末世的流俗却随意诋毁或称誉。
我怀念您却缺乏传信的羽翼，
临风而立，只能独自徘徊惆怅。

Gong Chuo's ambition was not for high station,
He would not dwell in Teng or Xue, those petty states.
Huang Xiang escaped the thorny, lowly position,
And gathered books again in Dongguan's library gates.
A grand warship does not ladle out mere broth,
Nor does the eagle or hawk go fishing in the moat.
A fox-fur robe is not for carrying firewood's load,
A ritual cauldron won't prop a cart on the road.
All things in life have their own proper place,
When they attain their aim, all find their grace.
To go against one's nature breaks the constant way,
To grasp the tip and miss the root leads astray.
The ancient sages valued mutual understanding deep,
While vulgar ages follow slander or praise cheap.
I long for you, but lack the wings to fly,
Facing the wind, I can but heave a sigh.
