Entering the gate, I present my card to the fluttering clerk,
It's not that I wish to see him, but propriety demands it.
How strange, host and guest both fall into silence,
The guest rises swiftly, as if fleeing a fire.
I feel impolite, ashamed before the sages of old,
How can I bear to let mud soil my court robes?
Life's gatherings are brief as geese alighting on a river,
The spring wind scatters them—who goes first, who lags behind?
