At dawn I sought the White Goose Mountain high,
At dusk I lodged where layered cliffs wind by.
The hollow vale, secluded and profound,
A single stream flows through its central ground.
Its placid waters pour into the deep,
Nor swell in summer, nor in winter shrink.
At first I thought some spirit might reside,
With bristling hair and bones chilled deep inside.
My soul was shocked, no breath dared I exhale,
My hair felt greasy, yet I feared to bathe.
Crossing the bridge, I dread the chasm's sight,
How could I dare to wash my feet outright?
I heard in past times monsters made their lair,
A primal chaos shaped the river there.
At dusk the gibbons wail, the flying squirrels cry,
At noon the bats in swarms across the sky.
With pig's shoulder, the shamans haste along,
Singing and dancing to please the spirits' song.
I reached its foot in search of solitude,
My spirit warned against a night's abode.
Lord Zhang, in Xining's early reign, did come,
To soothe his lonely soul and make this home.
A hundred characters he carved with care,
Their dazzling splendor captures every stare.
Protected well by many a watchful sigh,
No hundred demons dare come close thereby.
Oft in the night of wind and rain's harsh reign,
The wailing ghosts and spirits cry in pain.
Thus I know that where upright men reside,
Blessings and fortune ever will abide.
In former times, it was Yuan Jie who came,
And now it's Jiang Xizhu of present fame.
One carved an ode on Yanghua's stony face,
One left a record at Shun's shrine with grace.
With you, my lord, we three in union stand,
Admired forever through the ages' span.
Thus on the cliff I write these lines to trace,
To praise the beauty of this hallowed place.
