If the sacrificial meat is not offered,
Why bother with the ritual crown and procession?
A single day abandoning the rites' classic,
Is worse than never having lived at all.
The temple rat knows to fold its paws in respect,
Unchanged through winter's cold and summer's heat.
Grand ceremonies are but empty ornaments,
While bed mats become the sprouts of chaos.
They ignore the sage's true intent,
And only contend with clever tongues.
Like those who crave the sacrificial flesh,
Death finds them boiled in the five tripods.
