赤身下葬是怕触犯礼法，
厚葬则需索求华美的衣被棺椁。
用金缕玉衣包裹，
那五陵豪族的墓穴也并非不深。
万般珍宝埋藏着幽暗的光泽，
却苦于被成群盗贼搜寻。
上古之人并不堆土植树（标记坟墓），
将遗体弃置在荒野的树林。
在上供飞鸟饱食，
在下任凭蝼蚁侵蚀。
人之常情是远离腐臭，
又怎能明白孝子的心意？
死去的人或许还有知觉，
他们自己也会畏惧奢侈与过度。

Bare burial fears the rites and laws,
A lavish burial demands fine robes and quilts.
With golden threads and jade burial suits,
The tombs of the mighty are dug deep, indeed.
Countless treasures lie buried, their glow hidden in gloom,
Only to be sought by bands of thieves, their doom.
In ancient times, no mounds were raised, no trees were planted,
The dead were left abandoned in the wild woods.
Above, to sate the flying birds,
Below, to suffer the ants' and mole crickets' intrusion.
Human feelings recoil from the stench of decay,
How can they know the filial son's heart's true devotion?
If the departed retain some consciousness,
They themselves would also dread such extravagance and luxury.
