美好的花儿每日灌溉养护，
可恶的野草时常剪除薅拔。
养花的事情还没料理完，
野草的势头却又已高涨。
我向老园丁再三叹息道：
“无法报答您分毫的辛劳。”
“荣枯难道是天意吗？”
“我置之不理，听凭际遇。”
老园丁看着我叹息说：
“我岂会仇视这些莠草蒿莱？”
“这园圃是我的职责所在，
“不这样做岂不是失职叨扰？”
“您的话固然宽厚近情理，
“我自身怎敢推辞劳苦？”

Fine flowers are daily watered and tended,
While vile weeds are cut and uprooted from time to time.
The flowering task is not yet finished,
But the weeds' ambition has already grown high again.
With three sighs I say to the old gardener,
"I cannot repay your effort even by a hair's breadth."
"Is glory and withering truly Heaven's will?"
"I leave it to fate and let things take their course."
The old gardener looks at me and sighs,
"How could I bear a grudge against mere weeds and mugwort?"
"This garden is my duty and charge,
"If not for this, would I not be overstepping?"
"Your words are indeed kind and considerate,
"How dare I, in person, decline the toil?"
