The virtuous man once dwelled here, where he slept and stayed,
Every single grass and tree commands our reverence.
When Fu Weng first broke free from Bo Dao's captive shade,
He made a detour to visit me by the water's edge.
Three times in the temple he rested, auspiciously laid,
Then drifted eastward, along the Huai River's long pledge.
In Gusu, the official threads barely warmed the seat,
When evil eyes peered from on high, and he soon retreated.
By Parrot Islet, he played in the clear, sunlit creek,
And lodged at the riverside shrine, west of the long stream.
The yellow silk stele brought forth a strange, disastrous streak,
Banished to miasmic seas, like exiles in a dream.
Heaven endowed this man with purpose, clear and deep,
If the world rejects him, what doubt should we then keep?
The shaman summoned him, transformed into a yellow swan,
Not left to peck at rot, following the household hen.
The year before last, in late winter, to the temple I ran,
Opening my eyes, I chanced upon Zou Songzi then.
Fu Weng, in times past, found in him a worthy friend,
Now colors changed, I sigh for the exile without end.
Great summons dampened tears on the bamboo along the slope,
His spirit's awe-inspiring presence seems to elope.
This year, dense woods hang with the autumn heat's tight rope,
The partridge's call, "hook-zhou," to me seems to mope.
Returning, the wild monks are scattered, few remain,
The tattered curtains gnawed by rats—not like the past's domain.
Leaning on a staff that rises above my brow, I stand brief,
As dusk descends, the western hills hold the evening's motif.
