蜀中何物灵,有竹慈为名。

一丛阔数步,森森数十茎。

长茎复短茎,枝叶不峥嵘。

去年笋已长,今年笋又生。

高低相倚赖,浑如长幼情。

孝子侍父立,顺孙随祖行。

慈爱必孝顺,根枝信天成。

吾闻唐之人,孝行常忻忻。

郓州张公艺,九世同一门。

大帝闻其名,衡茅降至尊。

冯宿丱岁时,随父庐祖坟。

父子相随孝,灵芝特地春。

北海吕元简,四世为家主。

以至牛马羊,异母皆相乳。

虞乡董恭直,鞠养诸孤遗。

鸲鹆与鸦鹊,同巢而共枝。

孝行动天地,鸟兽皆随时。

又闻猓然兽,死不相弃离。

兽面而人心,此兽信有之。

兽心而人面,其人诚可悲。

李钧为侍御,弃母在温州。

母因殍饿死,甘旨何悠悠。

唐家法网宽,贷死流遐陬。

崔湜为侍郎,天子赐瓜香。

携归与爱妾,老母不得尝。

一旦恶贯盈,杀之于路傍。

越公锺绍京,至孝何殊常。

少时得果瓜,先解进高堂。

长大遇玄宗,荣华不可当。

孝者名常新,逆者污人伦。

人既不如竹,乃是一埃尘。

夫为人子者,莫若事尊亲。

夫为人父者,莫若教儿孙。

积善与行孝,可以立其身。

我愿移此竹,栽于率土滨。

使彼行人见,皆为慈孝人。

樵童见此竹,且莫伐为薪。

白话文翻译

蜀地有什么灵物?有一种以慈为名的竹子。

一丛竹子占地数步宽,茂密地生长着数十根茎干。

长茎和短茎交错,枝叶并不显得高耸突出。

去年的竹笋已经长高,今年的竹笋又生长出来。

高矮相互依靠,浑然如同长辈与幼辈之间的亲情。

孝子侍立在父亲身旁,顺从的孙子跟随祖父前行。

慈爱必然导致孝顺,根与枝的关联确实是天然形成的。

我听说唐代的人,孝行常常令人欣喜。

郓州的张公艺,九代人同住在一个门庭内。

皇帝听闻他的名声,亲临他的茅屋以示尊崇。

冯宿年幼时,跟随父亲在祖坟旁结庐守孝。

父子相继践行孝道,灵芝特地为此在春天生长。

北海的吕元简,四代人担任家族之主。

以至于家中的牛、马、羊,即使异母所生也互相哺乳。

虞乡的董恭直,抚养了许多孤儿遗孤。

八哥、乌鸦和喜鹊,同在一个巢穴,共享树枝。

孝行感动天地,鸟兽都顺应时宜(展现孝义)。

又听说猓然这种兽,至死也不互相抛弃分离。

龟和鲛鱼,母子长久相依相随。

长着兽的面孔却有人心,这种兽确实存在。

长着兽的心却有人面,这样的人实在可悲。

李钧担任侍御史,却将母亲遗弃在温州。

母亲因此饿死,甘美的食物何其遥远。

光禄卿李玕,也是这类人。

有母亲却不侍奉赡养,分居长达很久。

唐代法网宽大,赦免死罪流放远方。

崔湜担任侍郎时,天子赏赐香瓜。

他带回去给爱妾,老母亲却没能尝到。

一旦恶贯满盈,他被杀死在路旁。

越国公钟绍京,他的至孝非同寻常。

小时候得到瓜果,先呈献给父母。

长大后遇到唐玄宗,荣华富贵不可限量。

孝顺的人名声常新,忤逆的人玷污人伦。

人如果还不如竹子,那就只是一粒尘埃。

作为人子,没有什么比侍奉双亲更重要。

作为人父,没有什么比教育儿孙更重要。

积累善行与践行孝道,可以立身处世。

我愿移栽这种竹子,种遍四海之滨。

让那些行人看见,都成为慈爱孝顺的人。

砍柴的童子看见这竹子,切莫砍伐它当柴烧。

What is divine in Shu? The bamboo named 'Kindness'.

A single clump spans several steps, dense with dozens of stems.

Long stems and short stems, its branches and leaves are not towering.

Last year's shoots have grown tall, this year's shoots sprout anew.

High and low leaning on each other, like affection between elder and young.

A filial son stands attending his father, an obedient grandson follows his grandfather.

Kindness begets filial piety, roots and branches are heaven's design.

I've heard of people in Tang, their filial deeds ever joyful.

Zhang Gongyi of Yunzhou, nine generations under one roof.

The great emperor heard his name, visited his humble abode in person.

Feng Su in his youth, followed his father to guard the ancestral grave.

Father and son practicing filial piety together, the spirit mushroom bloomed specially in spring.

Lü Yuanjian of Beihai, four generations as head of the household.

Even oxen, horses, and sheep, from different mothers, all nursed each other.

Dong Gongzhi of Yuxiang, raised all the orphaned children.

Mynahs and magpies, shared the same nest and branches.

Filial deeds move heaven and earth, birds and beasts all follow the times.

I've also heard of the guoran beast, in death they do not abandon each other.

Turtles and jellyfish, mother and child stay together forever.

A beast's face but a human heart, such a creature truly exists.

A beast's heart but a human face, such a man is truly pitiable.

Li Jun as a censor, abandoned his mother in Wenzhou.

His mother starved to death, how distant were sweet delicacies.

Li Gan of the Court of Imperial Entertainments, is also of this kind.

He had a mother but did not serve her, living apart for a long time.

The Tang legal net was wide, he was spared death and exiled afar.

Cui Shi as a vice-minister, the emperor bestowed fragrant melons.

He took them back for his beloved concubine, his old mother got none to taste.

Once his evils filled to the brim, he was killed by the roadside.

Duke Yue Zhong Shaojing, his utmost filial piety was extraordinary.

In youth when he got fruits, he first offered them to his parents.

Grown up, he met Emperor Xuanzong, glory and splendor unsurpassed.

The filial keep their names ever fresh, the unfilial stain human relations.

If one is not even as good as bamboo, one is but a speck of dust.

For those who are sons, nothing is better than serving their parents.

For those who are fathers, nothing is better than teaching their children.

Accumulating goodness and practicing filial piety, one can establish oneself.

I wish to transplant this bamboo, plant it across all lands.

So that all who see it, become kind and filial people.

Woodcutters seeing this bamboo, do not cut it down for firewood.
