How can I sleep in peace? The drum beats, I rise at midnight.
Stepping out as if holding a candle, the moonlight shines for a thousand miles.
The roof tiles gleam faintly, as snow falls thick and fast.
A light chill pierces my camel-hair robe, the world's breath is like water.
Returning, I trim the lamp and sit upright, reading histories and classics.
My frail servant rubs his eyes, serving me with an unhappy look.
When questioned, he forces a reply, his mouth and teeth clenched tight.
The golden pot's ice slush congeals, on the wall-tops the watch drums die again and again.
The garrison soldiers, full and drowsy, are lost in deep, sweet sleep.
Though beating the watch-drum is a lowly task, it truly concerns all ears.
How is it that the one who oversees dawn and dusk, has confused the order to this extent?
Only the red-crested cock, crows ceaselessly without end.
