The human mind is easily drowned and lost;
It's not just about going out or coming in.
Without a constant method to examine oneself,
A single point of negligence may creep in.
The gap, once widened, leads both astray,
Like sheep that wander off and lose their way.
Thus the wise sages of ancient days
Remained ever vigilant, keeping watch always.
Active, as if perched on a tree, alert and keen;
At rest, as if tethered to a mulberry, firm and serene.
This inner mechanism, with daily practice, grows mature,
Enough to ascend the hall of learning, pure and sure.
Just like a mirror stored within its case,
Polished and ground, it emits a fresh, bright face.
Not a speck of dust is allowed to stay,
Its radiance grows more dazzling day by day.
All we who are devoted to reading books,
Let us bear these words in mind, never overlook.
