At dawn, warmth brews the frost's white hue.
In poverty, men's beards turn white anon,
On barren ground, leaves yellow first, too.
The silver-eye chats in the bamboo grove,
The thrush's song breaks from the ridge's crest.
No kitchen smoke has yet begun to move,
I rise and sing the Shang mode with zest.
