The Western Rong's plank houses, recorded in ancient verse,
Share customs with Min and Ou, across ten thousand li.
They weather storms and sun, bathed by the elements' curse.
Skilled craftsmen draw their lines, as if carving fine jade free.
The valley folk obtain them, swiftly roof their homes with glee.
Light yet sturdy, meeting every measure's decree,
Alas, the tender wood from southern hills, a pity to see.
Have you not seen Cao Cao's Bronze Sparrow Tower in Ye's hold?
How grand, the earthen tiles in pottery molds of old!
The tower fell, its base leveled, yet tiles remain untold,
Carved into inkstones, wondrous and rare, a story bold.
Have you not heard the lord of Huangzhou praise his bamboo bower?
Split bamboo, bending and joining, crafted with care and power.
Its tinkling sound is finest heard in a rainy shower,
Like striking jade chimes, a melodious, clear hour.
The Bronze Sparrow, trivial, not worth imitating, I vow.
Dry bamboo shoots catch fire easily, as we see now.
Not like fir-wood houses, lasting and fair of brow,
Unmoved by wind or rain, standing firm, I avow.
Alas, I bear my fault, exiled to barbarous land,
Like one with sores relieved, glad to shed clothes by hand.
A few beams of a broken house are not so bad, understand,
I look up and see stars, in a scattered, heavenly band.
The owl builds its nest to shelter from the storm's command,
The wren nests in the woods, content with one branch's stand.
Cloud-piercing mansions are spied on by ghosts, unmanned.
Beneath a humble gate, one may dwell, peaceful and grand.
