Beneath the Maiden's Temple lies a pool,
Clear and gleaming, lapping at the mountain's foot.
Swimming fish are bright within the mirror's depth,
Their simple trust finds in the spirit a safe hold.
In playful groups they fear no human presence,
As if they've gained the joy of nature's innocence.
Temple visitors often show them pity,
Tossing food, they vie and snatch without restraint.
One might suspect the spirit shields them thus,
So even if they gorge, who dares to touch?
Yet when the worldly-wise come to seize their share,
They end up in the soup, chopped fine for fare.
The spirit's care and shelter they enjoyed,
Could not avert this dark and cruel defeat.
How different is the ruler of the land,
Whose way is broad and vast, profound and grand.
When all under heaven lives in golden days,
His virtuous influence warms and shines always.
Extending this to creatures small and slight,
Even fish and turtles find their peace and light.
