乱邦难置足，遂欲九夷居。
更作乘桴语，与此意何殊。

两脚倦远涉，跼蹐西南隅。

白话文翻译
孔子的学说在当时得不到推行，
当时的君主视他为迂腐的儒生。
在混乱的国家难以立足安身，
于是便想去九夷之地居住。
又说出乘木筏浮海的话，
这与之前的想法有什么不同？
一根木头不同于舟船桨楫，
怎能逾越汹涌的波涛？
这是对世道愤激的言辞罢了，
大概是用以警醒昏聩愚昧之人。
连子路都未能透彻理解，
更何况其他的普通人呢？
我生来也不是时候，
战乱纷争搅乱了中原地区。
双脚已厌倦远行跋涉，
局促地困在西南一隅。
面对深渊每每感慨叹息，
浩荡的长江确实引发了我的思绪。
兴致勃发，撑起一叶小舟，
为排解心中的郁结，暂且舒怀。

The Way of Confucius found no acceptance in his time,
The lords of the day saw him as a pedant, stale and rime.
In chaotic states, no place to firmly plant one's feet,
So he thought of dwelling where barbarian tribes meet.
Then came his words of sailing on a raft, adrift,
How does this differ from his former thought's swift shift?
A single log is not a boat with oars and sail,
How could one cross the raging waves and storms prevail?
This wrath against the world was but a spur, a goad,
To rouse the deaf and warn the foolish on life's road.
Even Ji Lu had not attained the truth so clear,
How much less other men, whose minds are dim and drear?
I too was born in an unlucky, troubled hour,
When war and strife have muddled this land with their power.
My two feet, weary of long journeys to distant lands,
Are cramped and confined to the southwestern strands.
Facing the deep abyss, I often sigh with grief,
The Long River stirs in me a longing for relief.
My spirit moves, I push a little boat from shore,
To ease the stifling gloom, and let my heart once more.
