尚作蠹书虫,嗟翁一何愚。
旋增通典缺,旋修阜陵书。
毫芒集阅尽,白编还卷舒。
五诗讽被底,柳集诵日晡。
玩物能丧志,圣贤言皦如。
赋受有奇偏,谁能为耘锄。

询问老翁年纪多大,老翁说已七十多岁。
还像蛀书虫一样埋头书卷,唉,老翁是多么愚钝啊!
刚补上《通典》的缺漏,又去修纂阜陵的书籍。
细微之处都搜集阅览遍了,白色的书卷展开又卷起。
在被子底下讽诵五首诗,吟咏柳宗元的文集直到黄昏。
沉溺玩赏事物会丧失志向,圣贤的话说得明白透彻。
天赋的禀性各有奇特偏颇,谁能来为他除草耕耘呢?
I ask the old man his age, he says he's past seventy.
Still he burrows in books like a bookworm, alas, how foolish he seems!
Now he adds to the gaps in the Tongdian, now mends the books of Fuling.
He gathers every fine detail, reading through, rolling and unrolling the plain scrolls.
Five poems he chants beneath his quilt, the works of Liu he recites till dusk.
Trifling with things can make one lose his will, as the sages' words shine clear.
Our innate gifts are oddly skewed, who can then do the weeding and hoeing?
