我扛着锄头清除园中的荆棘，
邻家的老翁在吟诵他所听闻的消息。
鲜花盛开时，人们争相攀折；
野草疯长时，究竟有谁去耕耘打理？
近郊的树木被砍伐殆尽，如同烧焦的木炭，
无主的坟茔被随意焚烧，化为畲田。
我询问世事为何会沦落到这般境地——
只因军马日日纷至沓来，动荡不息。

With hoe in hand, I clear the garden's thorny weeds,
While my old neighbor chants the news that he has heard.
When flowers bloom, all vie to pluck them for their needs;
When grass grows tall, who cares to till the soil unstirred?
The trees near suburbs are all felled for fuel, bare,
And ownerless graves are scorched by fire, left in despair.
I ask how things have come to such a sorry state—
The army's horses surge and swarm, day after date.
