The Coming and Going Road
How safe is the road coming from behind the hill?
How safe is the road going ahead, forward still?
High places are not without their lows, you see,
There always is a passable way to be.
Just like the water in a mountain stream,
Day and night from the fountainhead it flows.
You only hear the sound of water streaming,
But never see the path from which it comes and goes.
To avoid obstacles, follow its smooth course,
Why should wisdom hold any malice at its source?
Later ages exhaust bridges and ships in flight,
All for the sake of lust and appetite.
Emperor Wu's song of the Heavenly Steed,
Its literary brilliance truly stands alone.
How could he know his army of a hundred thousand indeed,
Would leave their bones to autumn dew, unknown?
I wish for a thoroughfare reaching far and wide,
Where only merchants and traders may abide.
But once I meet a man bearing spear and shield,
Not a single step further can I yield.
