旧谷已尽，新谷尚未长成。
即便有精凿的好米，谁敢吝惜高价？
万钱也买不到五斗陈米。
青衿学子困于饥饿；
白发父老空自愁叹。

山洪怀河泛滥，阴雨持续逾旬。

On Ding Day, the scholars gather for the Confucian rite;
On Wu Day, the farmers rejoice in the harvest sacrifice.
Across the land, war rages and all things are transformed;
Only these rites remain, echoes of Yin and Zhou's ancient form.
The old rites barely survive, governance falls into decay;
Farmers are worn to the bone, scholars in deeper poverty stay.
In square caps they walk the streets, mocked and cursed by the crowd;
While farmers toil the fields, heavy taxes are allowed.
This year in May, torrential rains did pour;
Old grain is gone, new sprouts are seen no more.
Even fine rice, if one dares to hoard and raise the price,
Ten thousand coins won't buy five bushels, such is the crisis.
Blue-gowned students suffer hunger and distress;
White-haired elders can only sigh in helplessness.
Mid-autumn's Jiazi day, the rain grows worse indeed;
Mountains weep, rivers swell, dark skies for ten days proceed.
Libations in the court, offerings at the altar, done in haste;
Meager beasts and sour wine shame the gods they face.
Once alarms rise and bandits start their raid,
Life and livelihood for next spring may not be saved.
Hangzhou's children grow up in market streets;
Neither study lamp nor plow their hand ever meets.
They only know to chase pleasure and frivolous gain;
Who'd foresee chaos and dust, bringing windblown pain?
The Ding and Wu rites are obscure, their meaning lost;
They marvel at the tide receding, autumn's cool at cost.
Who cares for the dead lying by the roadside, cold?
While hibiscus and chrysanthemum welcome days of gold.
