何术使之动,不假人力施。
纬竹以为车,堰水江之湄。
湍流既迅急,枢轴为斡移。
朽杵辄雀跃,死磨犹骥驰。
一日殆百斛,成功归簸筛。
吾闻往古初,冥冥若愚痴。
火食尚未悟,人与禽兽嬉。
圣智既有作,便利无不为。
机事至此极,机心开自谁。
所以桔橰人,旁贻瓮汲嗤。
马本龁草物,教之谙战鼙。
铁若不入冶,焉有剑与锥。
工械日以广,生灵日以糜。
平生子方子,拙直为人欺。
见巧终不喜,讽此舂硙诗。

用什么方法能使它们运动?不借助人力的施加。
用竹篾编成水车的轮子,在江边筑堰拦住水流。
湍急的水流既已迅疾,枢轴便为之旋转移动。
腐朽的杵杆竟像麻雀般跳跃,静止的石磨却如骏马奔驰。
一日几乎能加工百斛谷物,成功的功劳归于簸箕和筛子。
我听说往古最初的时候,世界昏昧如同愚痴。
连用火熟食尚未领悟,人与禽兽一同嬉戏。
圣人的智慧有所创造后,便利之事无不为人们所施行。
机巧之事发展到如此极致,机巧之心又是从谁开始萌生?
所以使用桔槔汲水的人,反而被用瓮汲水者嗤笑。
马本是吃草的动物,却被教习熟悉战鼓声。
铁若不进入冶炉锤炼,怎会有剑与锥的利器?
机械工具日益广泛,生灵却日益遭受摧残。
我平生为人方正拙直,因此常被人欺骗。
见到机巧始终不喜,故吟咏这首舂硙诗以讽喻。
Withered wood has no feeling to impart, / And stubborn stone is ignorant at heart.
What art can set them into motion's play, / Without the toil of human hands' array?
With bamboo strips a wheel is made to bind, / A dam diverts the river's flow assigned.
The current swift, the pivot turns with might, / The axle shifts, revolving day and night.
The rotting pestle leaps like sparrows' flight, / The lifeless mill runs like a steed in light.
A hundred bushels ground within a day, / Success belongs to sieve and winnow's sway.
I've heard in primal times of ancient lore, / The world was dim, like fools, and knew no more.
Not yet aware of cooking food with fire, / Men played with beasts, no higher to aspire.
When sage-like wisdom started to create, / Conveniences began to permeate.
Machinery has reached its peak today, / But who first opened cunning mind's pathway?
Thus, well-sweep men, by jars and buckets' use, / Earned scorn from those who fetched with old abuse.
The horse, by nature, grazes on the plain, / Taught to know the drums of war and strain.
If iron were not smelted in the forge, / Where would the sword and awl their forms discharge?
Tools and contraptions daily wider spread, / While living souls are daily more misled.
All my life, I, Fangzi, plain and true, / Have been deceived by cunning, through and through.
I never take delight in clever art, / And chant this poem of the mill, from heart.
以物之无情反衬人之认知困境,触及主体认同的边界。
借槁木顽石的无情无知,抒发对世事人情的感慨与议论。
