Mount Lu's white clouds embrace the peak,
Just like the finest kapok, soft and sleek.
They cover all, the ugly and the fair,
Beyond a count, a number past compare.
The Incense Burner Peak of Eastern Grove,
Stands right before the temple gate, above.
The mountain's northern soil is moist and deep,
Where plants in autumn's beauty stir and peep.
I wander freely through the cloisters wide,
Who meditates alone, with peace inside?
The abbot, from the east of Huai, so grand,
His brows and eyes show sharpness, stern and grand.
His conversation, lofty and profound,
Often approaches where deep truths are found.
I wish to join a society here,
But feel ashamed before the master, dear.
The thatched hall is embraced by flowing streams,
The statue of Letian serene, it seems.
The west wind howls through countless fir trees tall,
I sit cross-legged on a green stone, enthralled.
The village elder gladly keeps me near,
Our talk and verses reach a sphere most clear.
The monks above are many, it is true,
Most seek the ties of alms and daily brew.
Still bound by many delusions' sway,
How can they find peace in three rafters' stay?
Floating through life, forgetting I have home,
A wondrous line knows it will never roam.
Dust and grime hasten the shortening day,
Wind and frost invade my declining years.
The setting sun pierces the western trees,
Alone, I lean on my bamboo staff, strong and at ease.
The bell rings, I prepare to seek my sleep,
Wine arrives, and my greedy mouth waters deep.
The moon rises over Three-Laughs Pavilion,
Drunk, I listen to the fishermen's slumber, a peaceful dominion.
