倚着栏杆长声呼啸,徒然地搔首踟蹰。
To ease my sorrow, I forbid the crimson strings to sing,
For such a sound would only to a sorrowful heart cling.
By riverside, the moment lute's lament begins to flow,
The moon turns pale, the wind grieves, as if touched by its woe.
How much more for a lonely wife, wounded by solitude?
A youth of many arts, with jade-like face and grace imbued.
The Marshal of Jiangzhou, a courtier of high degree,
At dusk submits remonstrance, at dawn faces exile's decree.
Gently stroking, finely twisting, he holds back tears to play,
Opens wine, lends an ear, lost in thoughts that drift away.
One poem tells two hearts' affairs, their intertwined despair,
The lingering melody turns to banquet song and air.
This old man's poetic fame through ages will endure,
Reciting his verse, I sigh for the lute-player, poor.
Who pities the guest mooring his boat before this bower,
Moved to deep melancholy by her drifting, lonely hour?
The neighbor's former songstress, with spring-breeze hands so fair,
This tune oft served to drown sorrow in the cup's despair.
Tonight, only three figures share the moon's shadowy gleam,
Leaning on rails, I whistle long, scratch my head in vain dream.
