In those years, a child of Jinhua's humble home,
His spirit roamed the nine heavens, the eight dimensions narrow.
Mount Fangling, fair and wondrous, stands alone,
A peak of azure blue, above the clustered hills it towers.
Would the child deign to glance down, halt his chariot's flight?
Pearls and shells form his palace, jade the lintel bright.
Before the gate, disorderly rocks stretch without bound,
A single shout, and in a blink, ten thousand sheep are found.
Rams and goats, in teeming throngs, jostle and mill around,
Crouching, bleating, gnawing, for the child's delight they're bound.
An old man in coarse cloth, his hair already gray,
Seems cunning yet not cunning, foolish in no way.
He gazes sidelong, spies upon the child's play,
Then turns his arm and sweeps it all, not a trace left to stay.
A cup of penalty wine the child must drain,
He whips the wind-steeds, back to Jasper Pool again.
Illusions shift, arise and fade, truth's borders blur,
Who gains, who loses, who is whole, who insecure?
To have yet be as naught, this is the Way's design,
The immortals' crafty tricks—can mortal minds divine?
To name it 'theft' reveals a flaw in judgment's line,
I come to seek the ancient traces, clues to find.
The mountain is my worthy friend, the child my guide,
Fine trees and wondrous stones in mutual grace abide.
As if carved, as if chiseled, like brows and hair arrayed,
I first bestow the name 'Juan Peak' upon this glade.
I beg a slab of stone, perhaps to carve a stele,
And send Master Zixu to compose its tale with zeal.
This child, this elder, surely will find mirth in this appeal.
