事情因合乎时宜而显得重要，
明珠暗投恐怕类似愚行。
毛子您怀有高深的学问，
傲视那些大小儒生。
您遍览了几位公卿的文章，
又带着自己的文章来到我的茅庐。
我境况穷困，学识浅陋，
再三拜读后，不禁长叹。
文章的妙处未能即刻领会，
您的用意恐怕太过孤高了吧？
劝您俯就世俗的潮流，
摘取高官显爵（如同摘取颔下胡须般容易）。
将来不朽的声名有所寄托，
（您的文章德行）——都将成为世人的楷模。

A ceremonial cap holds no value in Yue's land,
But a salve for sores might strengthen Wu's hand.
Actions gain weight when they suit the time and place,
To cast pearls before swine would be a disgrace.
Master Mao, you embrace lofty learning with pride,
Looking down upon scholars, both small and wide.
Having reviewed the works of many a high lord,
You brought your writings to my humble abode.
Impoverished, my literacy is but slight,
After three readings, I heave a long sigh at your height.
The subtleties I haven't fully grasped, I fear,
Your intent, sir, might be lonely and austere.
I urge you to stoop and follow common ways,
To pluck the purple and blue of official arrays.
In future times, an immortal legacy you'll entrust,
Each word a model for the world, worthy of trust.
