在稀疏的地方,最适宜皎洁的月光映照;
Not rhinoceros horn, nor jade of any kind,
A light frost seems to coat this tender, crisp green rind.
Shedding its sheath, with tips that into bamboo grow,
So slender, graceful, dense, they can be bound, you know.
In sparse spots, best when bathed in the lovely moonlight;
Their sturdy parts can bear the cool breeze's touch, just right.
If spared from kitchen pots, they'll fill the grove instead—
The master plants for eyes, not for his stomach's bread.
In usefulness, perhaps, the son outshines the sire,
Yet from the founder comes the fragrance and the fire.
At leisure all day long, reclining in my chair,
I'm glad with this fine friend to shun the vulgar air.
I sneer at those young fools in capital's vain show,
Who waste their gold on flowers and plants that merely grow.
