Beneath the city of King Wu, a stream flows wide,
Dug and channeled since the days it first was made.
Deep and boundless, with no shore on either side,
Only a stretch of emerald green, in which all things are laid.
Its breath expands the cosmos, making space more vast,
Its force could swallow rivers and lakes, so narrow they seem.
Towers and terraces in its clear reflection cast,
Isles in the stream with thriving, lovely plants agleam.
At dawn, red scales shimmer like morning's rosy hue,
At dusk, a golden mirror sinks with the moon's descent.
It seems a land of immortals, far from worldly view,
Set apart from the dust of mortal settlement.
Strange tales are spread and passed from mouth to ear,
True sources traced in maps and records old.
Tianmu Mountain stands in the southwest, severe,
From both its sides, steep torrents are uncontrolled.
Hundreds of valleys nearby rush to join the flow,
Adding their waters as they run and race.
Here, where the stream grows deep and still and slow,
Its depth beyond all measuring finds place.
Rice and grain sustain ten thousand families' need,
No barren field exists within this blessed land.
Fish and shrimp breed by thousands, a fruitful breed,
Daily in nets and traps they're caught by hand.
On dark and stormy nights, when winds and rains descend,
This place becomes the dwelling of the dragon kind.
In youth, by this stream I studied, time I'd spend,
In age, a guest beneath the tent, my fate confined.
To watch the waves, no former ambition stirred,
In peaceful times, ashamed to chant of marsh and mere.
My measure is but a puddle, small and blurred,
Facing the stream, I feel deep shame and reverent fear.
