说高台才是主人,我的身体如同旅舍;
I built a terrace overlooking the garden trees,
And soon a splendid roof covered the space.
The master, a man who sees through life's mysteries,
Wrote a poem and hung it by the gate's face.
He said the terrace is the host, and I a passing guest;
The terrace then replied, 'Do not so lightly claim this rest.
Heaven and earth are but a lump of clay,
How much more this handful of earth, I say?
Before I was a terrace, an ant-hill stood here,
Stirring as if a storm drew near.
When the master wished to build with spade and hoe,
No golden hammer could measure the toil below.
Steps and eaves rose with caps and belts in view,
Pines and bamboos gradually joined the crew.
All things in the world are ever-changing, it's true,
Today becomes the past, as all things do.
High banks turn into deep valleys in time,
White waves rise where mulberry fields once climbed.
Though long and short may differ in their span,
How far apart, in truth, is the measure of man?
When the master rests and guests arrive,
Here they find fine wine to revive.
The master kind, his wife and children glad,
With fat lambs served, no joy is sad.
The bright hall shines with records of old,
Opening and closing as heat and cold unfold.
A vulgar man cannot attain this state,
Like a cricket chirping by the garden gate.
The terrace and the master silently forget,
No more asking who is host, who's met.
