The people of Wu crave money as they crave sweet delight,
Even the love of kin can be shifted by this blight.
They raise a daughter, day and night, hoping she will grow,
But when grown up, she may not as a commoner's wife go.
A hundred gold they pay to have her taught in song and dance,
Hoping her body will sustain the household's circumstance.
The family, well-fed and warm, feels no pity for her plight,
While others gaze upon her with a covetous appetite.
In vermilion gates, rooms vie in beauty, fair and bright,
A hundred schemes are used to please the master's appetite.
Often neglected, she weeps in sorrow and despair,
Once favored, jealousy and envy fill the air.
The women of old feared to be a wanderer's spouse,
Weeping tears like rain each night in a lonely house.
The women of now are willing as a noble's concubine to stay,
Their joy or grief mirrors the moon on flowers, night and day.
The wanderer may not return, leaving the chamber bare,
The master's moods are fickle, shifting with no care.
