在灯笼下读《易经》,听着更漏将尽;
几茎胡须因忧时而变白;
不肯让华车美服就此埋没尘土;
By lantern light I read the Book of Changes, hearing night watches fade;
A fine rain patters softly as I shut my door, alone in the shade.
In times of order, could there be no counsel that I might impart?
Yet scholars from of old have often met with fortune cold at heart.
A few strands of my beard have turned white from worrying for our age;
A single point of my heart still glows crimson, loyal to the state.
I will not yet let carriage and robes sink into dust and grime;
This very life, I fear, may waste the scholar's cap and its prime.
