清晨出城到南郊，士卒与车马列队森严；
黑色的旌旗与红色的旗帜紧密地交相辉映。
勇猛如貔貅般跳跃的，是良家子弟；
像鹅鹳阵一样弥合队列的，是司马的号令。
为夺取锦标，一个个快步如飞，疾速向前；
成双成对地盘旋长矛，翻身动作强劲有力。
如今在霸上，暂且当作儿戏一般演练；
他日若要像卫青那样建功，还须仰仗天赐的幸运。

At dawn beyond the city's southern gate, the troops in serried ranks appear;
Black banners and vermilion flags in dense array reflect each other here.
The valiant sons of honest homes, like leopards, leap with martial might;
The marshal's orders, like geese and storks in flight, stitch the lines tight.
To seize the pennants, one by one they dash with swift and flying pace;
In pairs they twirl their lances, turning with a strong and nimble grace.
Today at Ba Shang, it seems but children's play, a mock display;
Yet like Wei Qing, they'll need Heaven's favor on a future day.
