Three or five trees, cold gibbons cry,
One or two calls fall upon the ear.
I suspect my ear has reached the place of their cry,
But it's the gibbons' voices, borne by wind, that draw near.
Their voices hold no sorrow, nor any complaint,
What in this world, then, for me remains to taint?
Deep in the night, the moon is white, the wind's breath cold,
Hearing this, suddenly, my very bones are made new, I'm told.
