Joy that the bitter chill retreats at last.
Wind and sun weave the air of spring, profound.
A light carriage carries song and flute's sound.
We choose famed gardens, idle hours to cast,
On fallen plums and blooming pear trees' ground.
A sudden, fine rain falls without a cause.
It stirs a quiet grief, a shallow pause
Of wine-drowned thought. I sigh for times now past,
When hand in hand we came, with laughter's laws,
And leaned 'gainst slanting curtains, free and fast.
The festive day returns in hurried flight.
Touching these thoughts, my heart takes sudden fright—
How can I bear to dwell on them anew?
My spirit tired, my feelings worn and few.
Walking brings no peace, nor sitting still.
Returning sullen, as the crowds depart,
And lamps grow dim, and gates prepare to part.
I think of joy—tonight should hold its fill—
